Personalization made easy: Introducing GetResponse’s Visual Dynamic Content Builder

Ask any email marketer for the best way to increase engagement rates, and they’ll likely suggest personalization.

You know it works. I know it, too. Heck, even ChatGPT knows this.

creenshot of an email marketing tip: 'The number one email marketing best practice is "Know your audience and deliver relevant, value-driven content."' Followed by detailed points: segmentation, personalization, timing, and clarity, emphasizing relevance for better engagement and conversions.
ChatGTP doesn’t know everything, but this one thing it does

And the data backs this up – consistently and convincingly.

But here’s the sad reality: most marketing emails still feel like they’re crafted for everyone (which means they resonate with no one).

Even though marketers understand the power of personalization, they often hit three major roadblocks:

  • Limited time to come up with different creatives or offers
  • Uncertainty about what personalization strategies actually work
  • Technical barriers to implementing dynamic content (DC)

Sound familiar? It sure does to me.

After years of wrestling with these exact challenges, I’m excited to share how GetResponse’s Visual Dynamic Content Builder transforms how we – and hopefully you, too – will approach email personalization.

The reality of email personalization: Why it’s been so hard until now

I wrote this guide to personalizing emails with dynamic content more than 5 years ago. But here’s the truth: most email campaigns I’ve seen – whether from our customers, team members, or even my own – barely scratched the surface of true personalization.

Instead, we settled for the basics: greeting recipients by [[firstname]] and sending separate emails to different customer segments.

(And yes, hopefully remembering to set proper exclusions to avoid bombarding the same recipients multiple times! 😅)

Screenshot of a coaching-related email starting with 'Hey Michal,' discussing the importance of clear calls-to-action. The email explains how calls-to-action bridge content and clients, comparing them to giving directions. It encourages creating a 'simple client journey map' to identify gaps like unclear steps, a complicated booking process, or friction points. The conclusion emphasizes the message: 'Confusion kills conversions. Clarity converts.'
Greeting someone by their first name isn’t true personalization

The result? We spent countless hours duplicating campaigns, testing templates, and managing recipient lists. Sure, we saw decent engagement – but at what cost to our time and business growth?

Several months ago, we set a goal for ourselves — to make email personalization so easy and intuitive that marketers won’t have any excuses not to implement it. Have we achieved this goal? We’ll let you be the judge.

A better way to personalize emails: Meet the Visual Dynamic Content Builder

Thanks to our dynamic content builder, you can now tailor the content of your email without writing a single line of code.

Whether it’s a banner, copy, CTA, external code, or an entire section, all you have to do is:

Step 1. Enter the GetResponse email editor

Step 2. Choose the element you want to personalize (1) and click Add conditions (2) as displayed in the following image:

Step 3. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to specify which recipients should see the given element by choosing a relevant list, tag, or custom field.

Let’s say you want to show your element to the people who’ve got a tag lead because you know they haven’t bought from you before. Just select the relevant tag like this:

Note: You can select multiple conditions (up to 8) at the same time.

Step 4. Once you’re done, click Apply.

And that’s it! Now, only the recipients who have this tag will see this specific element.

Step 5. What if you wanted to add another variant of this element for a different audience? Just add the second variant, stack it underneath the first one, and tailor the conditions the same way we did in step 3.

💡 To test what your email will look like in your recipient’s inbox, click on the Test and preview link at the top right of the screen and select Preview.

Next, turn on the Personalization check toggle and select a contact from one of your lists that meets the personalization conditions you specified a moment ago.

How you can use the Dynamic Content Builder

Now, you may wonder, how can I use this in my campaigns? Dynamic content offers endless possibilities, but here are some of the most common scenarios we’ve seen:

Consultants – tailor proposals

Let’s say you’re a consultant managing clients across industries. With the dynamic content builder in GetResponse, you can personalize emails to discuss industry-specific challenges and showcase relevant case studies.

You can also tailor service tiers or upsell offers based on each client’s budget, all without manual edits. This saves time and ensures your communication feels personal and relevant, helping you build stronger client relationships and stand out as an expert.

Here’s an example of what this could look like:

Coaches – share tailored resources

Imagine you’re a coach working with clients at different stages of their journey. You can tailor your emails to match each client’s specific goals, whether they’re just starting or striving to hit advanced milestones.

You could automatically share personalized resources, like a beginner’s guide or an advanced strategy plan, and adjust your messaging to align with their progress. Want to highlight upcoming workshops or 1:1 coaching opportunities? Dynamic content ensures your offers feel relevant to each client’s needs, saving you time and making every email feel personal and impactful.

Ecommerce stores – deliver personalized offers

If you run an ecommerce store, the dynamic content builder allows you to create personalized emails tailored to each shopper’s interests.

For instance, a customer who recently purchased from your home decor collection might see recommendations for matching items or exclusive discounts on related products. Meanwhile, a fitness enthusiast could receive deals on complementary gear.

Creators – promote tailored upsells

Let’s say you’re a creator selling courses, ebooks, and memberships. You can personalize emails to promote the right product to the right audience.

For example, someone who purchased an ebook could receive recommendations for a related course, while a course subscriber might see an exclusive discount on a membership plan.

SaaS businesses – personalize discounts

If you run a SaaS business (like GetResponse!), you’ve likely got customers on different plans and billing cycles. DC could help you craft personalized emails that offer discounts or upgrades tailored to each user’s subscription.

For instance, annual subscribers on your basic plan could receive a special offer to upgrade to a premium plan, while monthly users might get an incentive to switch to an annual cycle. The content updates automatically, ensuring every email feels targeted and relevant, helping you drive upgrades and improve retention without manual effort.

Tracking your results

Using the old personalization method you’d have to analyze each individual email separately. While this approach has some advantages, it mostly takes more time.

Now, you can see the results of your email campaign in one single report.
