What are external segments and how to use them? MAX
External segments allow you to send subscriber segmentation from a third-party system to GetResponse in order to use them directly in your account (for example in newsletters or automation). The third-party service may be your CRM or e-commerce plugins.
Before you begin
Make sure you have your FTP server configured as per the instructions from this article.
Note: This feature doesn’t add any new email addresses to your lists. In order to use it, you need to have all the email addresses that your external segments include as subscribers in a list of contacts in GetResponse. If you want to use personalization, all additional pieces of information need to be added in a form of custom fields directly in GetResponse before or after importing external segments.
How to create external segments and add them to GetResponse?
- The process starts with creating a segment in the third-party service you use.
- The segment needs to be exported as a .csv file. Its name should match the login email address of the account that the external segment will be added to.
E.g. if the account login is name@example.com, the file should be named
name@example.com.csv - The file needs to contain the name of the external segment and email addresses. The name is defined as a header and should be placed in the first row. It will be reflected in the Advanced search in your GetResponse account.

Note: The segment above contains only 2 subscribers out of the 3 that were uploaded. This is because the address unexisting_email@example.com is not in the GetResponse list.
- When you have the file ready, you can upload it to your FTP account.
- The file needs to be uploaded to a specific directory on the FTP server:
/sync_external_segments/insert
If you want to replace emails in an existing external segment with a new set of emails from a file, you need to use the following directory:
/sync_external_segments/replace
Important: This action cannot be reversed.
- If the import is successful, you will see the uploaded external segment in Contacts > Search > Advanced search > Add condition > External segment.
