What is click tracking?
GetResponse lets you track how many times contacts click links inside your messages. This includes newsletters, autoresponders, and RSS-to-email messages. Click tracking is enabled by default for all automation messages. The option is switched on and greyed out without the possibility to turn it off.
To enable click tracking in message settings:
- Go to Email marketing or Autoresponders, depending on what type of message you want to create.
- Click on the Create newsletter or Create autoresponder button.
- In the message settings, scroll down to the Tracking section and enable the Clicks toggle.
How does click tracking work?
Enabling click tracking changes the look of the link once sent. To track which links people click, we need to add a redirect to your original link. This change is necessary to associate the statistics with your account. The link will use a format like http://app.getresponse.com/click=7hs903hsnfkg64hd54grt but will still redirect to the correct target site.
What types of links can and cannot be tracked?
Click tracking works for all valid links added in your messages, including shortened links. However, we don’t recommend using link shortening services. If you think that your link is too long, the best solution is to hyperlink text or a button in your message. If you do use link shorteners, check if the domain provided by them isn’t blacklisted. You can check if the domain is blacklisted here SpamHaus and here URIBL.
The only links that cannot be tracked are the ones added in your messages as contact data fields.
To add trackable links to an HTML message:
- Enable click tracking for your message.
- Add the links with a special code: {{LINK `http://mysite.com`}}
Please note that we don’t offer assistance with HTML. Make sure you’re comfortable with coding or that you have a developer to consult with.
Where can I find report statistics?
Reports give you detailed information about your click rate. You can see Clicks and Total clicks metrics for each link added in your message.
- From the Dashboard select Reports.
- Select Newsletter reports or Autoresponder reports, depending on what type of message you want to check.
- On the Newsletter reports or Autoresponder reports page, select the linked list.
- Set the time range.
- Choose your message or messages. On the same page, you will be presented with general message statistics.
To check the click rate statistics for a specific email:
- On the Newsletter reports or Autoresponder reports page, scroll to the Newsletters sent or Autoresponders sent section and click on the name of the message.
- The detailed statistics will open. Click on the Opens and clicks tab.
In the Opens and clicks section, you can Create and send a new message to contacts who: clicked or didn’t click links in your message.
Total clicks and Clicks metrics:
- Total clicks – this metric shows how many times contacts clicked a given link. If 1 subscriber clicks a link 3 times, Total clicks will show 3 clicks.
- Clicks – this metric shows how many people clicked a given link. If 1 subscriber clicks a link even several times, the Clicks metric will show 1 click.
To see Total clicks and Clicks metrics for each link:
- Access Opens and clicks section of the specific email statistics.
- Scroll down to the Links clicked section.
At this point, you won’t be able to get a list of contacts who clicked and/or didn’t click links in your email. To see who clicked your links, use search conditions.
How do I improve my click rate?
To keep a high click rate it is important that you email those contacts who are interested in your content. A decreasing click rate can be a sign your list has gone stale. You can improve the quality of your list by running a reactivation campaign. If you would like to learn more, see How to fix a stale email list?
