10 best Mailchimp alternatives for 2024

29 min
Updated:

For years, Mailchimp was the go-to email marketing platform for small and medium-sized businesses, thanks to its feature-rich free plan and impressive brand presence.

However, since Intuit acquired Mailchimp in 2021, the platform has begun to deter many users by implementing several price increases, removing some of its features, and, most recently, laying off 1050 ‘underperforming employees.’

These changes have prompted businesses to seek out more affordable and customer-focused alternatives.

If you’ve been affected by Mailchimp’s recent shifts or are looking for a better solution, this article will introduce you to top Mailchimp alternatives that I think are worth considering. These alternatives will enhance your email marketing efforts without straining your budget.

About the author:

My name is Michal Leszczynski, and I’ve been working in the email and automation field for 12+ years. Currently, as the Head of Content Marketing and Partnerships at GetResponse, I’ve run and audited hundreds of email campaigns sent by brands across various industries. I also teach a postgraduate course on Email Marketing at Kozminski University in Warsaw and hold an MSc in Strategic Marketing and Consulting from the University of Birmingham, UK. In this article, I did my best to share my unbiased review of the best email marketing platforms I’ve tested myself.

Why consider Mailchimp alternatives?

Here are some reasons why we’re no longer fans of Mailchimp:

Pricing: Mailchimp’s pricing plans are expensive, especially if you have a bigger email list.

For example, if you have 50,000 contacts, you would need to pay $450 per month to use Mailchimp’s Standard Plan.

For the same list size, GetResponse’s mid-level plan would cost $359 p/m. The platform additionally offers discounts for longer-term contracts (18-30%) and nonprofit organizations (50%).

Limited free plan: Mailchimp only offers email support for the first 30 days for the free plan and has restrictions for most features.

For example, their free plan limits the number of contacts to 500 and the number of emails sent to 1,000 per month.

Hidden costs: Mailchimp charges you for all your contacts, including those who bounced, unsubscribed, or haven’t even confirmed their subscription (if you use double opt-in). Additionally, if you exceed your sending limit, you’ll get an additional overage charge.

Inflexible features: Mailchimp’s email and marketing automation are often very limiting. For example, it’s very difficult to send the same message to multiple audiences.

Limited support: Users frequently report that getting answers to more technical questions takes days, and you’ll often bounce between different departments. The live chat support is helpful, but they rarely provide account-specific advice, and you’re better off searching through their documentation on your own.

Some of these top 10 Mailchimp alternatives were listed as the best email marketing software by Forbes Advisor in 2024:

  • GetResponse: Best for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Moosend: Best for legacy companies
  • Brevo: Best for unlimited contacts
  • Mailerlite: Best for selling paid subscriptions

Let’s now take an in-depth look at the top 10 alternatives to Mailchimp. Please note that the order in which these email marketing services are listed does not reflect any ranking from best to worst. I encourage you to choose the platform based on your use case and budget and not the order in which these are listed.

1. GetResponse

GetResponse is one of the best Mailchimp alternatives.

GetResponse is a comprehensive email marketing platform that provides small and mid-sized businesses, solopreneurs, coaches, and marketers with powerful and affordable tools to grow their audience, engage with their subscribers, and turn subscribers into paying customers.

Although best known for its email marketing capabilities, its features go way beyond email. Inside the platform, you’ll also find forms and popups, landing pages, automation, webinars, web push notifications, and more.

It’s an intuitive and powerful email marketing platform designed for efficiency. Compared to Mailchimp, it’s affordable and scalable, especially as your email list grows and you want to engage with your audience across multiple marketing channels.

Features and unique selling points

GetResponse has various features that go beyond email marketing. Here’s a sneak peek at some of them:

  • Email marketing automation: Using a visual workflow builder GetResponse allows you to create and send automated emails to your subscribers based on their behavior and preferences. For example, if a contact buys a particular product on your page every Friday. You can use GetResponse’s automation feature to send weekly reminders, recommendations, and special offers.
  • AI generative features: Not a copywriter? Don’t worry. GetResponse offers various AI-generative tools to help you craft the perfect email, web push notifications, paid ads, and more.
  • Email templates: If the design isn’t your strong suit, you’ll be happy to know that GetResponse offers stunning prebuilt templates you can easily customize to match your brand. These come with stock images, too.
  • Integrations: Connect your favorite online tools to your GetResponse account. This is especially useful for ecommerce businesses since GetResponse offers powerful integrations with platforms like Shopify, Magento, PrestaShop, WooCommerce, and many others.
  • Multichannel marketing: GetResponse comes packed with built-in tools like Webinars, Landing Pages, SMS, Web Push Notifications, Mobile Push Notifications, Live Chats, and more. If you want to run comprehensive marketing channels across various channels without breaking the bank, you’ll enjoy having these tools under one roof.

GetResponse also offers multi-language support. You can use the website in 10+ languages, making it easy for users to launch email campaigns in the languages they understand best.

Pricing and plan options

GetResponse offers three main pricing plans – Email Marketing, Marketing Automation, and Ecommerce Marketing.

If you’re just getting started, you can register for the Free plan, which offers essential email features for users with up to 500 contacts. Additionally, it gives you a 30 day access to key premium features so that you can get a feel of the whole platform.

GetResponse's pricing plans

For the paid plans, you can choose the Email Marketing plan, which starts at $15/month; the Marketing Automation plan, which starts at $49/month; and the Ecommerce Marketing plan, which starts at $98/month billed annually.

Your choice will depend on the nature of your business. If you want to run simple email marketing or drip campaigns, your best bet is the Email Marketing plan. If you want more advanced automation scenarios, webinars, or ecommerce-specific features (e.g., abandoned cart recovery), you should look at Marketing Automation and Ecommerce Marketing plans.

The MAX packages, shown above, are an excellent solution for users looking for even more advanced features (e.g., SSO, dedicated IP addresses), dedicated support, and custom pricing.

💡 If you’re ready to commit to a longer contract, GetResponse offers 18% and 30% discounts for annual and biannual plans. And if you’re a nonprofit organization, you can get 50% off your plan.

User interface and email builder functionality

As you can see from the image below, GetResponse’s interface is clean and intuitive.

Customer support and reviews

G2 rating (August 2024): 4.2/5

AWeber offers excellent customer support via phone, email, and live chat.

The platform has received positive reviews for its user-friendly interface and customer support.

Unfortunately, it also has downsides like relatively higher pricing compared to other alternatives and the fact that businesses or individuals have to pay for all subscribers, whether active or not.

AWeber also has few functionalities compared to other email marketing software. That makes it a great choice for small businesses but not for big companies with too many needs and demands.

For instance, it currently only allows A/B testing for emails but not landing pages. Meanwhile, platforms like GetResponse allow you to test up to 10 design variants of the same landing page.

👉 For a more detailed review, check out our GetResponse vs. AWeber comparison.

HubSpot

Finally, Hubspot has the advantage of being an email marketing software built on a well-established CRM platform. That means users’ emails are powered by customer data, which guarantees better results.

It’s also easier to keep track of your contact lists or subscriber preferences.

Pricing and plan options

HubSpot’s email marketing prices are included in their Marketing Hub’s plans, as shown below.

Hubspot pricing.

The pricing plans include a free plan with basic email marketing features.

Customer support and reviews

G2 rating (August 2024): 4.4/5

ConvertKit offers a balance of support options (Community for free users; Live chat and Email for paid users), receives positive feedback for its user-friendly approach, and maintains high deliverability rates. However, users seeking extensive A/B testing capabilities may find this area lacking.

Mailjet offers a free plan that allows users to send up to 6,000 emails per month, with a limit of 200 emails per day.

The paid plans start at $15/month, the premium plan at $25/month, and the Custom plan is tailored to a business’s needs. However, you’ll have to contact the sales team for pricing.

User interface and email builder functionality

Mailjet’s user interface is intuitive, with all the necessary features and email marketing tools readily accessible from the main dashboard.

It’s also available in 5 languages (English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian).

The email builder is also easy to use, with a drag-and-drop interface and a wide range of prebuilt templates.

Customer support and  reviews

G2 rating (August 2024): 4.0/5

Mailjet offers priority phone and chat support to Premium and Custom users only. As a result, some users have reported occasional delays in response times and difficulty reaching customer support during peak hours.

Another downside is the limited A/B testing capabilities compared to other email marketing tools. Again, Mailjet only offers A/B testing to users in the Premium and Custom Plans.
